Elgin police arrest suspect in June 29 drive-by shooting
Elgin police have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected in a drive-by shooting last week in the 600 block of St. Charles Street.
Francisco J. Espinoza, of the 600 block of Elma Avenue in Elgin, is charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm in the direction of another person or vehicle, a Class 1 felony, stemming from the June 29 shooting.
According to police, officers were called to the scene about 6:39 p.m. June 29 after receiving a report of multiple gunshots. Officers found three men who told them they saw someone shoot in their direction from a passing vehicle. The men were not injured, police said.
A search of the area revealed corroborating evidence that a firearm had been discharged, according to police. Officers also located an unoccupied vehicle that was struck by gunfire.
Espinosa was identified as a suspect during an investigation by the Elgin Police Department's Gang Crimes Unit and Unit for Special Assignment, police said.
He was taken into custody without incident Thursday in the 900 block of Ford Avenue, and appeared in Kane County bond court Sunday, when a judge set his bail at $75,000.
The shooting remains under investigation. Elgin police are encouraging anyone with information to call (847) 289-2974 or text 847411 and include ELGINPD in the beginning of the text.
