Miners blast Schaumburg Boomers 9-1
The Schaumburg Boomers fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could not overcome the Southern Illinois Miners in a 9-1 road loss on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Southern Illinois grabbed the lead just two batters into the bottom of the first against starter Seth Webster, who lasted a career low two innings. Schaumburg battled within 3-1 in the top of the second when James Keller doubled home Nick Lynch with his first career extra-base hit. The Boomers stranded runners at second and third when a liner was caught to retire the side and the hosts scored four times in the bottom of the second on four hits to break open the game.
Webster allowed seven runs on 7 hits with three walks and 3 strikeouts. Kurt Lipscomb came on in relief to work a career high five innings. Kenny Towns picked up 3 hits for the Boomers, who tallied five in the defeat.
The Boomers (21-19) continue the brief three-game road series on Wednesday night. Left-hander Lars Liguori will make his debut on the hill against right-hander Josh Kimborowicz (5-0, 2.58).
