Man charged with aggravated DUI in fatal Spring Grove crash

A Spring Grove-area man has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol following a fatal crash in that town, police said Monday.

Ryan Heineman, 33, will be taken into custody and held until a court appearance once he's released from Centegra Hospital-McHenry, where he's been undergoing treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries, Spring Grove Police Sgt. Jason Hintz said.

Tanya McDonough, 33, also of the Spring Grove area, was killed in the crash. She was a passenger in the Jeep Heineman was driving.

The accident happened early Sunday morning along Route 12 east of Sunset Road in Spring Grove, authorities said.

Heineman was driving east when the Jeep left the road and crashed, winding up on its side, Hintz said.

Police were called to the scene by a passer-by who saw people in a roadside ditch there. When officers got to the scene about 6 a.m., Heineman was sitting in a grassy area next to McDonough's body, Hintz said.

McDonough died from injuries to her head, chest and abdomen, an autopsy conducted Monday by the McHenry County coroner's office revealed.

It is unknown how much time passed between the crash and when the passer-by found McDonough, Hintz said.

“That's part of the investigation. We are still trying to nail down the whole timeline,” he said.

Police also are investigating how McDonough and Heineman wound up outside the car on the ground, Hintz said.
