Victim of reported highway shooting is 17, police say

The victim who reported he was shot over the weekend on Route 53 near I-90 is 17, Illinois State Police revealed Monday.

State police say they are continuing to investigate the shooting that prompted the temporarily closure of Route 53 between 3:25 a.m. and 5 a.m. Saturday. Authorities say they were alerted to the shooting when the teen got himself to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was treated for wounds and released.

On Monday, police still couldn't confirm where the shooting occurred or even the time it happened. Initially, police said the shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 53 near the Jane Addams Tollway. At the time, state police said the victim's story "wasn't making sense" and they weren't sure which direction the victim's vehicle was traveling at the time of the shooting or if the victim was driving when he was shot.

No further details were available Monday.
