Old Settler's Picnic at Schaumburg farm July 16

Step back to a summer day in the 1880s during the Schaumburg Park District's Old Settler's Picnic & Beer Garden from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Volkening Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road in Schaumburg.

Interpretive staff will re-enact a typical community picnic during the 19th century in Schaumburg.

Based on traditions of first-generation German immigrants, the event will feature live music, historic games and farm livestock.

"In 1880s Schaumburg there was an event called Old Settler's Picnic, so we decided to bring it back," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "It was fun, similar to a beer garden, where everyone came to socialize, enjoy food and play games."

Admission is free. Participants may bring picnic foods or purchase food and drink, including alcoholic beverages for participants 21 and older.
