Rickie Fowler, who has missed the cut in four of his last six tournaments, is the highest-ranked player at Congressional. He has a corporate deal with Quicken Loans. ... The winner receives a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour. ... Merritt is the only player to make the Quicken Loans National his first PGA Tour victory. ... Congressional has hosted the U.S. Open three times. Ernie Els, who won his second Open at Congressional in 1997, is in the field. ... Jon Rahm of Arizona State and Jordan Niebrugge of Oklahoma State make their pro debuts. Rahm was low amateur at the U.S. Open, and Niebrugge was low amateur at the British Open last year.

She was poised to win last year until Na Yeon Choi holed out for eagle on the 16th and made birdie on the 17th for a two-shot victory. ... Sei Young Kim became the fifth multiple winner on the LPGA Tour this year. Eleven players have won the 17 events to date. ... Lewis, Brittany Lang, and Brittany Lincicome are among nine players who have competed every year since the tournament began in 2007. ... Maria Fassi is playing on a sponsor exemption awarded to an Arkansas player. ... Brooke Henderson and Lydia Ko, who have won both majors this year and are No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, are in the field. ... Juli Inkster, who spent last week as a course reporter for Fox Sports at the U.S. Open, is playing this week.

Lee McCoy, who finished fourth in the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour in March, is playing on a sponsor exemption. ... This starts the heart of the European Tour schedule in Europe with national Opens in Germany, France and Scotland before The Open Championship of the Royal & Ancient at Royal Troon. ... Willett won his first European Tour title at the BMW International Open in 2012 in a playoff over Marcus Fraser.

Notes: Bernhard Langer's victory in the Senior Players Championship made him the first PGA Tour Champions player to win multiple majors in three seasons - 2010, 2014 and 2016. The others to achieve that were Gary Player (1987-88) and Jack Nicklaus (1990-91). ... Steve Stricker helped to launch the American Family Insurance Championship and is the tournament host, even though he isn't eligible to play. He doesn't turn 50 until February. ... Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and offensive lineman Mark Tauscher will partner with Stricker and two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North in a nine-hole celebrity scramble event during the second round. It will start after the leaders make the turn. ... Bernhard Langer leads the tour with a 68.6 scoring average, which is 1. 57 strokes ahead of Jeff Maggert.
