Abreu's double in 10th lifts White Sox over Red Sox

BOSTON - Jose Abreu doubled home 2 runs off Boston closer Craig Kimbrel with 2 outs in the top of the 10th inning after the White Sox escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth, lifting them to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox on Monday night.

The White Sox snapped a 3-game losing streak and won for just the eighth time in 26 games. Boston has lost five of eight.

Zach Duke (2-0) wriggled out of the ninth to get the win. David Robertson worked the 10th for his 17th save.

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright pitched 9 innings, giving up only an unearned run and 5 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 3 while lowering his AL-best ERA to 2.01.

Abreu doubled to right-center off Kimbrel (0-3) after Avisail Garcia walked and J.B. Shuck singled.

In the ninth, the Red Sox loaded the bases on 3 walks by Zach Putnam. Duke relieved and struck out pinch-hitter Dustin Pedroia before Christian Vazquez bounced to a fifth infielder placed in front of second base. Tyler Saladino threw home for a force, and then Duke fanned pinch-hitter Ryan LaMarre to end the threat.

White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez gave up 1 run and 4 hits. He was lifted after giving up the tying hit with 2 outs in the seventh.

Gonzalez entered the game with a 3.27 ERA against the Red Sox and was 4-0 against them in five starts at Fenway Park.

He mostly mixed a sharp-breaking slider with a mid-90s (mph) fastball, keeping Boston off stride and inducing a number of weak swings. The highest-scoring team in the majors was getting shut out until Vazquez's broken-bat single dropped into center, tying it at 1.

Gonzalez was a contrast to Wright, who had his usual array of knucklers moving, but mixed in occasional curveballs one at 64 mph and fastballs in the mid-to-upper 80s.

Coming off a weekend when they were swept in three games at Cleveland and scored just 6 total runs, the White Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Brett Lawrie had a 1-out double, advanced on a flyout and scored on Vazquez's passed ball.
