Schaumburg Convention Center hosts paradise for Legos fans

Some of the country's best Lego creators mingled with the suburbs' biggest Lego fans this weekend when the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center hosted the annual Brickworld Chicago Expo.

The four-day celebration of Legos and everything one can create with them brought thousands of children and AFOLs, aka Adult Fans of Legos, to the convention center to check out huge displays built by experts, build creations of their own, participate in contests and games, and learn about the latest in Legos.

Among the visitors Sunday was Marcio Mardones of Lake in the Hills and his 4-year-old son, Jake.

"He loves everything," Marcio said. "Good guys, bad guys, ships, the movies. This is our first time here. It's a little overwhelming for the little guy, but we're used to that. We wish we had more time here."

Brian Reitz of Naperville takes a picture of one of the Star Wars Lego displays alongside his 5-year-old son, Chase Reitz, wife, Ellie Reitz, and their 22-month-old daughter Ava on Sunday at Brickworld Chicago's premier Lego exposition in Schaumburg. "He's thrilled," Brian said of his son. Morgan Timms/mtimms@dailyherald.com
