Three men charged in armed robbery of taxi driver in Wheaton

Bail has been set at $300,000 for each of the three men accused in the Monday afternoon armed robbery of a 60-year-old taxi driver in Wheaton.

Authorities said the driver also was stabbed in the chest and beaten during the robbery.

Alix Santacruz, Isaiah Davis and Davontae Carr are each charged with armed robbery. Santacruz, 20, of Wheaton, also is charged with aggravated battery; Carr, 22, of Wheaton, also faces a charge of obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors say the taxi driver was robbed and attacked during an alleged exchange of cash for a sexual act to be performed by an underage female.

Assistant State's Attorney Rob Willis said Santacruz orchestrated the robbery as early as last Thursday or Friday, when he began communicating with the taxi driver.

Just before 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, the driver picked up Santacruz and the girl at the apartment complex 1324 East Roosevelt Road under the guise of taking them to a nearby pharmacy. Police say Santacruz and Carr lived at the apartment complex.

Santacruz demanded to see the driver's money prior to the sex act and then pulled a knife and cut the victim, leaving a wound that needed two stitches, authorities said.

As the driver fled the cab, he was “jumped” by Carr and Davis, 20, of St. Charles, Willis said. During the assault, the victim's clothes were ripped and his keys stolen.

Carr admitted to being in on the plan to set the driver up while Davis is accused of knowing of the plot and admitted to “throwing at least two punches.”

Santacruz, however, told Judge Richard Russo that he was solely to blame.

“There are no co-defendants in this case,” Santacruz said during his bail hearing. “I acted alone.”

According to court records, Santacruz was released from DuPage County jail on May 6 after serving 76 days for fleeing and eluding a peace officer.

According to court records, Carr was released from DuPage County jail on May 7 after serving a monthlong work release sentence for a 2012 misdemeanor criminal sexual abuse conviction.
