Des Plaines VFW retires worn American flags on Flag Day

Des Plaines VFW Post 2992 hosted a flag disposal ceremony Tuesday - Flag Day - to retire worn and unserviceable American flags.

VFW member Tom Repa manned a fire pit at Lake Park as other veterans and local children helped to place old flags there for their ceremonial disposal.

Many veterans groups such as the VFW sponsor flag disposal ceremonies. According to the VFW, proper flag disposal calls for a fire fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag. During the flag burn, individuals can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
