Palatine man sentenced for Barrington auto theft

A Palatine man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of burglary and possession of a stolen car.

Jurors convicted Brontay Matlock, 24, Thursday. Matlock's background, which includes convictions for retail theft and burglary, made him eligible for an extended sentence. He was on parole for a 2014 conviction at the time of his arrest, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say he approached a Barrington business owner last August expressing interest in purchasing the man's BMW. The man lent Matlock the keys so he could look over the car, prosecutors said. Matlock substituted the owner's keys with another set, returned early the next day, replaced the plates with those from a Springfield dealership and drove the car to Springfield, from where he had recently moved, prosecutors said.

Matlock retrieved some of his belongs and returned to Palatine. Police tracked the car to Matlock's Palatine home through its vehicle recovery system and towed it to the police station, prosecutors said. They arrested Matlock after he called police to inquire about retrieving his belongings from the car.

Matlock received credit for 282 days in custody.
