Lombard driver services facility likely reopening next week

The Lombard driver services facility is expected to reopen next week, almost a month after it temporarily closed without warning.

Officials locked the doors of the building at 837 S. Westmore-Meyers Road on May 25 after the heating and air conditioning systems broke and temperatures inside reached about 90 degrees.

Secretary of state spokesman David Druker said Wednesday the parts needed to fix the systems have arrived and repairs have begun. The state rents the facility and the property owner is responsible for the repairs.

"There were some rumors going around that (the closing) was budget related. It's strictly an issue with the heating and cooling," Druker said. "We hope to have it open as soon as possible and we're sorry for any inconvenience to the customers."

In March, the Secretary of State's express driver's facility in downtown Wheaton almost closed when the building's landlords announced they would not renew a lease with the state because of its failure to pay rent for more than six months.

The landlords agreed to renew the lease, however, after hearing from residents who were upset at the prospect of the facility closing.

Until the Lombard site reopens, the nearest location for all driver and vehicle services is in Naperville at 931 W. 75th St.

Limited services also are available at the 128 W. Liberty Drive location in Wheaton; 1903 N. Mannheim Road in Melrose Park; 1280 Powis Road in West Chicago; and 1227 E. Golf Road in Schaumburg.

Updates on the reopening of the Lombard facility will be posted on the secretary of state's website, at cyberdriveillinois.com.
