Incorporated in 1958, Buffalo Grove straddles the border between Cook and Lake counties, with about a quarter of its roughly 9.5-square-mile area extending south of Lake-Cook Road in Cook County's Wheeling Township, and the rest north of it, in Lake's Vernon Township.

According to the village's website, www.vbg.org, its estimated population was 41,715 as of 2012.

The earliest settlers arrived in the area in 1834, according to the Raupp Museum's timeline, with notable early settlers including John Simon Henneman, Jacob "Little Jake" Weidner and Melchoir Raupp.

The village contains Aptakisic-Tripp School District 102, most of Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated School District 96 and several schools in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21, as well as Buffalo Grove High School, part of Northwest Suburban High School District 214.

Most public high school students in the Cook County portion attend Buffalo Grove High School or Wheeling High School, while most in the Lake County portion attend Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire.
