Waukegan police searching for shooter in botched robbery

Waukegan police are searching for a man who shot one person during a robbery attempt at the BP gas station at 902 Grand Ave. in Waukegan early Wednesday morning.

According to surveillance camera footage released by police Wednesday afternoon, the man with the gun - a thin black man with facial hair, according to witnesses - approached two men with his weapon drawn while they were gassing up their car around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to police, the assailant attempted to strike one of the victims with the gun and the gun discharged, firing a bullet into the man's shoulder. After the first man got shot, the second man attempted to detain the gunman but was struck on the head with the gun.

The gunman was last seen fleeing on foot west on Grand Avenue.

The gunshot victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and the other victim was treated and released on scene by paramedics.
