West Nile carriers in Glenview

The first mosquitoes of 2016 found to be carrying the West Nile virus were discovered in Glenview on May 25, the Illinois Department of Public Health said. Four out of five people infected with West Nile will not show any symptoms, the IDPH says, but the fifth will have fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches for a few days to a few weeks. In rare cases, West Nile produces severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death. People who see a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact their local health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing. In 2015, IDPH reported 77 human cases (although human cases are underreported), and nine deaths. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported so far in 2016.
