West Chicago journalism students earn blue ribbons

Journalism students at West Chicago Community High School won six blue ribbons and one honorable mention this spring at the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association conference.

Blue-ribbon winners are sophomore Yamilex Rodelo of West Chicago, photography; sophomore Catherine Miller of West Chicago, feature writing; senior Kyle Paup of Carol Stream, editorial writing and individual in-depth; and senior Nayeli Lara of West Chicago, editorial writing, and review writing. Paup also received honorable mention for news writing.

The student-operated newspaper, the Wildcat Chronicle, earned a gold rating.

"I am extremely proud of the student journalists for all their hard work and determination to do well," adviser Laura Kuehn said. "They put in long hours, and it shows."

Students submitted their work to NISPA judges, who ranked them by division. The Wildcat Chronicle competes in Division 4, which includes Libertyville, St. Viator, Kaneland, Wheeling, Rolling Meadows, Deerfield, Lake Zurich, Eisenhower, Glenbard South, Hersey, and Plainfield South high schools.

The Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association has an annual conference each spring to recognize student journalists in Illinois.
