Workers protesting wages at McDonald's Oak Brook headquarters

Thousands of McDonald's workers gathered at the fast food giant's Oak Brook headquarters Wednesday to protest wages in a demonstration that will continue this morning.

Protesters from across the country are demanding a $15 minimum wage ahead of McDonald's annual shareholder meeting in Oak Brook today.

“It's hard to live on the minium. We need $15 to raise our standard of living,” said Naquasia Grand of New York.

Despite heavy rains, workers began marching near the corner of 22nd Street and Jorie Boulevard Wednesday night. Earlier, they planned a strike at the Rock ‘n Roll McDonald's in downtown Chicago just before the lunch rush.

Another rally is set to begin 6 a.m. today at McDonald's headquarters, 2111 McDonald's Drive. About an hour later, workers will march again from Jorie and Forest Gate Drive.

The company says employees at its headquarters were working from home Wednesday.

The world's biggest burger chain also told employees to work from home during last year's protest.

A super sized protest went down in the rain on Wednesday evening at McDonald's U.S. Headquarters in Oakbrook. Around 3,000 Cooks and cashiers were protesting low wages in hopes of getting a pay increase to $15 an hour like in New York and California. Paul Michna/pmichna@dailyherald.com
