Chicago White Sox bullpen springs a leak
The Chicago White Sox's bullpen has been the best in the major leagues over the early part of the season.
The unit slipped a bit Monday at Texas, giving up 3 runs in 6⅓ innings, but Todd Frazier picked them up with a grand slam in the 12th inning.
On Tuesday night, Sox relievers completely fell apart in a 13-11 loss to the Rangers.
Leading 11-6 in the eighth inning, Scott Carroll, Zach Duke and Matt Albers combined to give up 7 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks as Texas stormed back and snapped the White Sox's winning streak at four games.
The game was delayed 1 hour and 18 minutes by rain.
After going 4-for-6 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in Monday's 8-4 win over the Rangers, Frazier stayed hot in the middle game of the series. The third baseman was 1-for-3 with 2 walks and 3 RBI.
Frazier had an RBI groundout in the first inning and a 2-run single in the third.
Avisail Garcia added a 3-run double in the fourth inning off Alex Claudio after Texas reliever Anthony Ranaudo issued 5 straight walks.
Melky Cabrera and Brett Lawrie each were 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Carlos Rodon got the start, and the White Sox have no doubts he is going to be an elite major-league pitcher.
The Sox felt that way in June 2014, when they drafted the left-handed pitcher with the No. 3 overall pick. They have similar feelings now.
"He's a great pitcher," right fielder Adam Eaton said. "He's going to be really, really good for the White Sox for a long time, and for him to learn here and there it's good to see."
Rodon still has a bright future, but he has been scuffling this season and was 0-3 with a 6.30 ERA heading into Tuesday's game against the Rangers.
Rodon struggled early against Texas, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and a walk in the first three innings, but he settled down and actually got stronger after the rain delay.
For the game, Rodon pitched 6⅔ innings and gave up 6 runs on 12 hits and 2 walks while striking out seven.
