Tough guy Colton Orr retires after 9-year NHL career

TORONTO (AP) - NHL tough guy Colton Orr has retired after nine years in the league.

Orr played for Boston, the New York Rangers and Toronto. He had a total of only 12 goals and 12 assists, but his fighting ability won him a regular job. He had back-to-back 82-game seasons with the Rangers in 2008-09 and Maple Leafs in 2009-10. For his career, he piled up 1,186 penalty minutes.

In a statement released by the players' union Thursday, he called his time in the NHL an "amazing journey."

Late in his career, Orr had trouble sticking with a team as the enforcer role fell out of favor. He failed to make Toronto's roster in 2014-15 and cleared waivers, appearing only in the Leafs' final regular-season game, his last NHL appearance. Orr played 10 games with Calgary's AHL affiliate this season.
