Wheeling H.S. student's art on display at U.S. Capitol

Wheeling High School student Hannah Bradford has been named the 10th Congressional District winner in the Congressional Institute's nationwide High School Visual Arts Competition. Bradford will have her artwork titled, "The Scientist," displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol and will be recognized in Washington, D.C. Each spring the Congressional Institute, a nonprofit corporation, sponsors the competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Students submit entries to their representative's office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

• Juan Salgado has been named the Loyal Eagle Award winner by Leyden High School District 212 for the 2015-16 school year. Salgado graduated from West Leyden in 2012; played soccer at Leyden for four years; and was on the 2011 Regional Championship team. For two years now he has been a volunteer assistant coach for the varsity soccer team that won back to back regional championships and this year advanced to the Sweet 16. Salgado, who was nominated by soccer coach Mark Valintis, was recognized for his continued loyalty to District 212 students during a recent school board meeting.

• St. Thomas of Villanova School in Palatine has appointed Mary Brinkman as principal. Brinkman, who has been teaching at St. Thomas for 38 years, has been Acting Principal since August 2015. Previous to that she taught health and physical education to all grade levels and was assistant principal for eight years. Brinkman has a bachelor of arts degree from Benedictine University and her master's degree from George Williams College.

• On April 7, the Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 school board made the following appointments for the 2016-17 school year: Kelly Dvoracek, the assistant principal at Armstrong and Muir schools will be the new principal at Nerge Math & Science Academy, Roselle; Shaun Conway, a social studies teacher and the department chairman at Huntley High School, will become assistant principal at Keller Junior High, Hoffman Estates; and Betty Weir, a curriculum coordinator for the Winnetka Public Schools, will become the assistant principal at Lakeview School, Hoffman Estates.
