Girls soccer: Barrington motors past Hoffman Estates

Barrington's girls soccer team unleashed a high-octane attack which led to 4 first-half goals and an eventual 6-0 victory over host Hoffman Estates to put a damper on the Hawks' home opener in Mid-Suburban West play Wednesday.

"We played quick, switched the ball, and our speed of play and tempo were very good, especially in the first half," said Fillies junior Haley Tausend, who drove in a pair of close-range headers off Soph Spinell corners on a rainy night when the Fillies (3-1-1, 2-0-0) found several ways to get into the back of the Hawks' net. "But we still have a lot of work to do in our game."

The name of the game for Hoffman Estates was adjusting to Barrington's quickness.

"Speed of play - three words we talked about all week," said Hawks coach Jeff Bird. "We knew Barrington plays at a high level, and that we needed to be quicker as well. But it's different when you're out there, and they move the ball too quickly, and again with so much speed. But it's all about learning from a game like this, then moving on from it."

The hosts bravely defended a Fillies attack that was aggressive from the opening whistle. Barrington had its front seven in synch with nearly passes, which led to quality runs and several well-placed early balls that kept the Hawks (3-2-0, 1-1-0) under pressure for most of the first period.

"(They) brought so much speed and quick passes that eventually we were fatigued, but we didn't give in, and played a much better second half, which is something we've done in just about every time out," said Hawks back-line standout Jennie Nailor, who won a high percentage of tackles on a busy night of play for the four-year veteran. "Now we have to put 80 solid minutes together from here on out."

Kayla Keck opened the scoring when she ran freely onto a Spinell corner in the sixth minute to provide the Fillies' back line with the first of 3 goals. Tausend doubled the Barrington lead ten minutes later before Ellie Stodola kept on running at the Hawks' back line and was rewarded for her effort when she fired in the Fillies' third goal of the half from just inside the 18.

Maesyn Poidomani unloaded a 22-yard thunderbolt just before the break when a ball out of the back to Jackie Batliner found the Fillies junior forward in a classic against-the-run-of-play goal.

Stodola, Michayla Herr, Anna Brodjian and Spinell helped Barrington dominate at the midfield and control the scoring chances.

"It was a good night for us, but the great thing about this team is they love the challenge to improve, and they never stop working at it," said Barrington coach Ryan Stengren. "It's a good trait to have in a team, especially with so many sophomores and juniors on our roster this year."

Hawks keeper Frankie Van made a handful of sure-handed saves to keep things close for the home side. And after the break, the work rate of Bird's club improved, with the trio of Michelle Montes De Oca, Natalie Nagrant and Anna Sall getting more involved as the Hawks got forward. Freshmen Payton Badziong enjoyed a solid second half alongside Nailor.

But Barrington still was able to expand on its lead. Tausend score her second goal at 58 minutes, and Poidomani got her second strike 60 seconds later on a nice bit of combination work with teammate Kayla Schutter.

Barrington will host MSL West rival Palatine on Friday, while the Hawks will travel Buffalo Grove.

Prospect 1, Elk Grove 0: Freshman Ella Marzolf came up with her first varsity goal, assisted by Grace Bauer in the second half, to help the Knights to the top spot in the MSL East standings.

Mehgan Rickett benefited from strong defensive play by Tina Suto, Natalie Marfilius, Grace Johannesen and Kathryn Szukalla in earning another shutout.

Buffalo Grove 1, Hersey 0: The visiting Bison made a first-half goal hold up in an MSL East victory as Georgette Topalis scored the game-winner with an assist from Kara Tyner. Keeper Cassie Berman picked up a shutout for the Bison.
