Elgin Area U-46 launches mobile app

Parents and students of Elgin area schools now can download a smartphone app to access information, including school lunch menus, district news, and email addresses for principals or coaches.

The new Elgin Area School District U-46 app is available for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

"We're excited to introduce the mobile app to the U-46 community," CEO Tony Sanders said. "This is a great way for parents to find the information they need quickly and efficiently."

Through the app, students, parents and community members can directly link to district and school websites, get top stories from social media feeds, and access the district calendar and Infinite Campus to view grades. Features include the school directory, quick access to high school sports scores, the weekly e-newsletter from Sanders and a link to the weather forecast.

Officials are challenging schools to put this tool to use through a friendly competition between April 11 and May 13 aimed at driving parents to download the app.

The U-46 Educational Foundation supported the app launch with a $5,000 grant. The foundation was established in 2008 to cultivate educational programs and activities not typically financed with tax dollars.

"We're happy to support a tool that promises to help our U-46 families and friends stay informed," said E.C. "Bud" Wilson, foundation president. "The app helps our district and school leaders become even more accessible."
