Man held on DUI, weapons charges after Mount Prospect crash

A man who authorities say was involved in an accident Sunday on Rand Road in Mount Prospect was ordered held on $50,000 bond on DUI and weapons charges.

Harry Schwegan, 59, of Fargo, N.D., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner's Identification card.

Police recovered an open bottle of vodka on the floor of his car and a Bushmaster M4 rifle along with several magazines of ammunition in the trunk, said Cook County assistant state's attorney Maureen McGee.

Schwegan was on probation on a charge of unauthorized use of a weapon stemming from a December 2015 incident at the Pump Room in Chicago, McGee said. After drinking several shots of tequila, Schwegan passed out at the bar on Dec. 11, McGee said. When an employee tried to rouse him, Schwegan pointed a gun at the employee, McGee said.

Schwegan's FOID card had been revoked at the time because of an active order of protection against him, McGee said.

No one was injured in the Mount Prospect accident, authorities said.

If convicted of the non-probationable firearm felony, Schwegan faces up to five years in prison. He next appears in court on April 28.
