Rollins emerges as Chicago White Sox' starting shortstop

Signed to a minor-league contract Feb. 22, Jimmy Rollins didn't join the Chicago White Sox with aspirations of playing for Class AAA Charlotte this season.

Rollins, a 37-year-old veteran who was voted National League MVP in 2007, joined the Sox because he wanted to be the starting shortstop. With top prospect Tim Anderson needing additional minor-league seasoning, the opportunity was there, but Rollins had to earn it.

And he did.

Before wrapping up the Cactus League season Wednesday with a game against the Cincinnati Reds, the White Sox purchased Rollins' contract and strongly hinted he will be the starter at short Monday night when the regular season opens at Oakland.

The Sox also optioned pitchers Jacob Turner and Scott Carroll to Charlotte.

"To win the job is great," Rollins told reporters. "That's just the beginning. Just go out there and be productive when I get my opportunities to play and when I'm getting my days off and rest, get ready for the next day."

Rollins, a three-time all-star and four-time Gold Glove winner, posted a .354/.373/.604 hitting line with 4 home runs and 13 RBI this spring.

"He swung the ball well down here from both sides of the plate," manager Robin Ventura said of the switch hitter. "When he's fresh, he's got some good range. He's been making the plays he's had to make."

Given his age, Rollins is not going play 162 games for the Sox this season. When he needs a break, utility infielder Tyler Saladino will get the call at shortstop.

"There will be some splitting it up," Ventura said. "I want to make sure Jimmy stays fresh. He'll probably be the one starting on Monday. But I think where he's at, it's better to keep him fresh. I think he's going to be a better player. At his age, he does well when he's had these days off, even here."

Rollins, who will make $2 million this season, is fine with sitting games out from time to time.

"I know it takes a toll physically," he said. "Getting a day or two off here and there does a lot."

In 144 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, Rollins slashed .224/.285/.358 with 13 home runs, 41 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

Rollins played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2000-14.
