Lombard church marks Good Friday with 'emotionally charged' service

Christians across DuPage County recalled the final hours of Christ's life during solemn services on Good Friday.

In Lombard, about a dozen parishioners gathered for the Stations of the Cross in a dimly lighted Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. With readings and images, the stations depict Jesus' torture, crucifixion and death.

"It's getting that emotional sense of what it's like to be abandoned by God in a lot of ways and have your enemies surrounding you," said the Rev. Amy Gillespie, the church's new pastor. "It's a very emotionally charged service."

Later Friday, Holy Trinity's choir performed the scene entirely with music in a performance of "Song of Shadows."

Worshippers will observe a much different ceremony on Easter Sunday, when they celebrate Christ's resurrection and triumph over death.
