Shaving heads for a noble cause in Wauconda

Wauconda's four-day Shamrock the Block festival downtown featured several bald heads in the name of charity Sunday.

The head-shaving event was held next to Middleton's on Main benefiting St. Baldrick's to help find a cure for children's cancer. Wauconda residents Debbie Sumberlin, her brother Stanley Bates, her great nephew Cameron Dowd, 10, and her sister Donna Workman, an Alabama resident, sat together holding hands and holding signs with the names of family and friends lost to cancer, as their heads were shaved.

They helped to raise more than $15,000 for St. Baldrick's. Also on Sunday, a Wheelmen's St. Patrick's Day Ride was held and restaurants continued their St. Patrick's celebrations.

The fest kicked off Thursday with traditional Irish food, drinks and music, and a pub crawl was held Friday. Saturday events included the Jog n Java run, a St. Patrick's Day Parade and a Leprechaun Plunge in Bangs Lake.
