Green Oaks voters reject borrowing for road repairs
Officials in Green Oaks will make road repairs as they can after the sound defeat Tuesday by voters of a measure that would have allowed the village to borrow money to fix most streets over eight years.
With all five precincts reporting, unofficial results show 419 voters in support and 752 against. Early and absentee votes are not included.
"We've always said we'll respect the decision whatever it is," said village Trustee Dan Sugrue, who heads the board's streets and roads committee. "We'll try to figure something out that will accomplish our objectives and respect the wishes of the residents," he added.
Voters were asked to authorize the village to borrow $18.8 million to repair or rebuild 24 miles of village streets, or about 88 percent of the total in town. The annual cost to the owner of a home valued at $300,000 would have been $453 and $936 for the owner of a $600,000 home.
Sugrue said the village has about $200,000 in motor fuel tax funds and vehicle sticker sales that are used in the annual road program.
