Conant Girl Scout teaches seniors to FaceTime, take selfies

Using iPads for the first time, a group of senior living community residents had a blast learning how to take and view photos, snap selfies and FaceTime this week.

The older adults acquired these new skills thanks to Girl Scout and Conant High School student Stephanie Stanislawski, who donated two iPads to Alexian Village, 975 Martha St., Elk Grove Village, and is hosting classes on how to use them as part of her "iPads for Seniors" project.

"I believe my project will help the residents stay connected to their families and learn new technology," says Stephanie of Troop 42301, who raised money to purchase the iPads. "I hope to inspire and educate the residents, welcoming them to new technology."

The seniors caught on quickly. Stephanie's grandmother, Barbara Stout of Alexian Village, successfully used FaceTime to video chat with relatives in Wisconsin, at the first class. Other residents marveled at the ease of taking and viewing photos on the large screen. Stephanie created custom-made, large-print manuals for her "students" to use when she's not there.

Stephanie's "iPads for Seniors" project is for her Gold Award that she hopes to earn by using her leadership skills to share her ideas and passions to benefit the greater community.
