District 211, police: Rumors of Schaumburg violence not substantiated

Schaumburg High School administrators and Schaumburg police determined a rumor started Tuesday "that there was going to be violence within the school" was not a credible threat to students and staff.

"None of the rumors were substantiated," Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 spokesman Tom Petersen said. "We investigated it because that is our due diligence. We take any threat in a serious manner."

Peterson says the rumor did not include a description of any potential violence.

Around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Schaumburg High School administrators received calls from concerned parents whose children had notified them of the rumor, according to an email sent to parents from Schaumburg Principal Tim Little.

Schaumburg Police Lt. Shawn Green said the rumor was about one specific student.

Green said he believes the rumor started when a conversation was misinterpreted by other students.

"Not only was there no threat at the time," Green said, "there is no ongoing or future threat."

No lockdowns or early dismissals were issued, Petersen said.

Classes will be held Wednesday.

"There will be increased police presences at school tomorrow just to make students and staff a little more confident about their security," Petersen said.
