Nobody injured after Megabus catches fire in Lake Forest
Nobody was injured after a coach bus caught fire Sunday in Lake Forest, fire officials said.
Approximately 40 passengers and the Megabus driver evacuated the double-decker bus when fire crews arrived to the scene about 12:15 p.m., according to a news release from Lake Forest Fire Department.
The Megabus had been traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis, according to a statement from Sean Hughes, director of corporate affairs for Coach USA North America. It caught fire along southbound Route 41 between Route 176 and the entrance to the Lake Forest Hospital, fire officials said.
Southbound Route 41 was closed at Gage Lane from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., authorities said. The bus had extensive fire damage, officials said, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Megabus officials would only confirm that the bus was "involved in an incident today near Waukegan.
"Safety is our top priority, and Megabus.com is fully cooperating with the authorities with their investigation into the incident," Hughes said.
According to his Twitter account, New York Times Frugal Traveler columnist Lucas Peterson was among the Megabus' passengers.
