Elk Grove teen charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old
An Elk Grove Village teen faces charges he sexually abused a 13-year-old girl multiple times between December and February.
Jose Rivera-Mejia, 19, was ordered held on $175,000 bail Thursday on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Prosecutors say Rivera-Mejia met the girl through friends and communicated with her through a social media site.
On Dec. 14, prosecutors say Rivera-Mejia, who also knows the girl's older sister, met the 13-year-old on the premise of driving her to school. Instead he drove to a fast-food restaurant where they parked and kissed, said Cook County Assistant state's attorney David Mennie.
On multiple occasions after that, Rivera-Mejia picked the girl up and drove them to places in Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows where they engaged in sexual contact, Mennie said. Rivera-Mejia occasionally phoned the girl's school claiming she was sick or had a doctor's appointment, Mennie said.
On Tuesday, the girl's older sister saw online messages they had sent each other on the younger girl's cellphone, Mennie said.
The judge ordered Rivera-Mejia have no contact with the teen or anyone else under age 18. The judge also prohibited him from accessing social media.
If convicted Rivera-Mejia faces up to seven years in prison,
He next appears in court on March 11.
