Schaumburg third-grader the Illinois winner of Google contest

Amelia Sanders, a third grader at Thomas Dooley Elementary School in Schaumburg, was surprised during a school assembly Friday to learn that she was the Illinois winner of this year's Doodle 4 Google national contest.

A "doodle" is the logo design that periodically appears on the Google.com website to celebrate special events.

Each year, students from kindergarten through high school are invited to doodle based on a specific theme. This year's was, "What makes me ... me."

Amelia's doodle was titled "Animal Kingdom" and depicted a variety of animals making up the familiar Google logo.

In her entry, Amelia wrote, "I love animals. I read books and watch TV shows about animals all the time. All animals have different powers. Even the small animals can surprise the big ones. I want to be a cute, smart, tough and brave girl like my favorite animals."

Amelia's artwork can be seen at google.com/doodle4google. Until Feb. 22, people are invited to visit the page and vote for their favorite doodle from across the country.

Google will choose the winner from among the five finalists with the most votes.

The national winner will be announced March 21, and his or her artwork will be featured on the Google homepage.
