SWAT helps apprehend Wauconda man who threatened neighbors, smashed windows, police say

A SWAT team was called in to help Wauconda police apprehend a 26-year-old Wauconda man who was causing a disturbance by threatening his neighbors and smashing out the windows of his trailer Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to Heather Cognac, a Wauconda police public information officer, by the time village officers arrived on the scene around 2:40 p.m., the resident of Woodland Trailer Park had already retreated into his home.

Cognac said officers used a PA to try to communicate with the man while he was inside his trailer but he did not respond. Cognac said there was a report that the man may have had a weapon, so officers asked nearby residents to evacuate their trailers and move to a safe distance. She said officers requested assistance from the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group and the Illinois State Police SWAT.

After about five hours, the SWAT team approached the trailer and again tried to make contact with the man, who finally responded, Cognac said. The resident was then taken into custody without further trouble around 7:40 p.m.

Cognac said the man didn't have any weapons on him when he was arrested. Criminal charges are pending.
