Aurora man killed, Batavia man stabbed in fight outside bar

A 36-year-old Aurora man was killed and a 22-year-old Batavia man was stabbed but not seriously hurt during a confrontation in the parking lot outside a bar in the heart of downtown Aurora early Saturday morning, police said.

When police arrived about 1:40 a.m. after a report of shots fired, they found at least 100 people shouting and fighting in the parking lot behind La Quinta De Los Reyes, a bar at 36 E. New York St., just across the Fox River from the Hollywood Casino and less than a quarter mile from Aurora City Hall.

Marcus Holland, 36, of the 1000 block of Foran Lane, Aurora, was lying in the lot, suffering from gunshot wounds, police said.

According to an Aurora Police news release, it appears that following a large party inside the bar, two groups of people began arguing and fighting once they got outside.

Police said Holland apparently was shot more than one time by an unknown subject who then fled. The Batavia man was stabbed moments later just outside the restaurant, police said.

The Batavia man was treated and released at an Aurora hospital for a nonlife-threatening injury to his back. Holland was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is pending at the Kane County Coroner's Office.

No description of the shooter was available, but the suspect in the stabbing was described as a black man in his early 20s, 5-foot-10, 150 to 170 pounds, wearing a black, white, and red hooded sweatshirt with a white shield on the front, police said.

Police said it is not clear if the two incidents were related and a concrete motive has not been established in either the shooting or the stabbing. Police said most of the people at the scene were uncooperative and hostile; however, investigators are pursuing some leads.
