Art Van Furniture to open in Algonquin Commons

A second Art Van Furniture store will be opening along the Randall Road corridor this spring.

The former Gordmans discount store at 1500 S. Randall Road in Algonquin will become Art Van Furniture.

Art Van, a furniture and mattress store, is expected to open in May. The store, on the west side of Randall in the Algonquin Commons shopping center, is undergoing some changes on the 48,000-square-foot building for the project.

“Art Van is currently doing renovations on the interior and exterior of the building, said Katie Parkhurst, senior planner for the village of Algonquin.

“The floor plan inside the building is being changed around to better suit Art Van's layout,” she said. “The exterior of the building will have some windows installed.”

Before finding the Algonquin location, the business had considered opening in the former Dominick's location in Lake in the Hills, near the intersection of Randall and Algonquin roads. That store, just to the east of Randall Road, still sits vacant.

However, Art Van selected this location in Algonquin instead in October when Gordmans announced it was closing.

Until the Algonquin location opens in May, furniture shoppers can visit the Art Van Furniture to the south, on Randall Road in Batavia, on the west side of Randall Road.

The new Algonquin Art Van Furniture store will be the 10th in the Chicago area.

Yoga for a cause:

The Lifetime Fitness in Algonquin along Randall Road will be home to a fundraiser this weekend for a local boy who has been battling leukemia.

Nancy Meyers, a yoga instructor, will be hosting the fundraiser from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at the fitness center, 451 Rolls Road, Algonquin.

The proceeds will benefit Jacob Matthaei of Lakewood, who was diagnosed with leukemia in November.

The little boy has had numerous hospital visits and medical treatments in his battle against the disease since he was diagnosed in November.

To help pay for those medical costs, and to do something to help the brave little boy and his family, Meyers is leading the yoga class at Lifetime.

The yoga class will touch on the aspects of the boy's difficult journey — including love, support, strength, endurance, gratitude and bravery.

There is a $10 suggested donation for the class, which is open to both members and nonmembers of Lifetime as part of the fundraiser.

All money collected will go to Jacob's parents to help with medical expenses from his fight against leukemia. People are welcome to give more than $10 too, to attend the class.

Even people who have never done yoga are invited to come try the class and to donate to the cause.

If you cannot attend the class on Sunday, you still can donate to the cause.

There is a page set up for the family at www.youcaring.com/jacob-matthaei-465787 where you can make donations.
