1 injured after Amtrak train collides with truck near Lisle

One person inside a BNSF welding truck was injured after an Amtrak train struck the vehicle just east of the Yackley Avenue overpass near Lisle Saturday night, authorities said.

The man was "conscious and aware" after the crash and taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Lisle police Sgt. Mark Lutz said.

The westbound Amtrak train No. 383 was attempting to switch lanes near the overpass just before the crash at about 6:37 p.m., Lutz said.

BNSF officials told police the train could not pick up an obstruction in the tracks because the truck was parked too close to the signaling tower, Lutz said. Another worker was outside the truck and was able to safely move out of the way, Lutz said.

Metra trains on the BNSF line, meanwhile, have been stopped, Metra spokesman Meg Reile said. It's unclear when service will resume for the line's inbound and outbound trains, she said.

Cranes were en route to clear debris that had scattered over the tracks, according to a Metra service advisory.

"We're having some problems getting the vehicle removed from the track," Reile said.

There were no injuries to any of the 114 passengers and three crew members aboard Amtrak train No. 383 after the crash, Amtrak spokeswoman Chelsea Kopta said.

The train collided with the truck before its next stop in Naperville, Kopta said. The train's final destination was Quincy.

Amtrak was working on providing alternate transportation for the train's passengers.
