Car, ambulance collide in Gurnee
An ambulance and a car collided Thursday evening in Gurnee, injuring a paramedic and a patient, fire officials said.
The crash happened just after 6 p.m. in the intersection of routes 132 and 21. The collision caused the car to burst into flames and rolled the ambulance onto its side, Gurnee Batallion Chief Bob Heraver said.
The Superior ambulance was transporting one patient and a family member of the patient, as well as two paramedics.
The patient was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in serious condition. One paramedic was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in good condition. The other two people in the ambulance were uninjured.
The driver of the car was not injured. The intersection was shut down for an hour while emergency officials salted the road so the water used to extinguish the car did not freeze.
The crash remains under investigation by Gurnee police.
