Bird walk at Volo Bog

The next bird walk at the Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside is set for 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 10. The walks traverse prairie restorations, woodlands, old fields, marshes and the Volo Bog itself. Sandhill cranes are still lingering and winter birds, such as American tree sparrows, nuthatches, chickadees, blue jays, and cardinals, are among the more familiar types to be seen. Visit www.eBird.org to explore the most recent sightings. Bring binoculars and field guides, or borrow from Volo Bog leaders. The walk is about three miles and takes from two to three hours. Adults and attentive kids ages 6 and older are welcome. Registration is requested at (815) 344-1294 or dnr.volobog@illinois.gov. Volo Bog is on Brandenburg Road west of Route 12.
