Waukegan police, fire save kitten from drain pipe

Waukegan police and firefighters spent about two hours on Monday rescuing a kitten that was stuck in the drain pipe of a home.

A resident reported hearing the cries of a cat from inside the pipe on the 600 block of Home Avenue in Waukegan. When animal control officers arrived around 10:30 a.m., they found that the kitten had fallen down an open drain pipe in the front yard, according to a news release.

Fire Lt. Steve Berkman and firefighter Rob McDonald assisted and spent almost two-hours attempting to rescue the cat.

"Using a piece on conduit pipe and running a rope through the pipe to fashion a loop the firefighters were able to lasso the kitten and lift it safely out of the pipe," the news release said.

The kitten was taken to animal control for an exam and appears to be in good condition.

It is unclear whom the kitten belongs to, and if no owner is located it will be turned over to a rescue center for adoption.
