Fire evacuates Hoffman Estates apartment building; no injuries reported
A stove fire that led to the evacuation of a Hoffman Estates apartment building Monday night caused an estimated $5,000 damage, but all residents escaped injury, officials said.
Hoffman Estates firefighters were called to the 600 block of Mesa Drive at 7:14 p.m. in response to the reported fire in a second-floor unit, according to fire officials. Residents had put out some of the fire with a home fire extinguisher by the time firefighters arrived. Firefighters put out what remained using a dry chemical fire extinguisher, authorities said.
Because of smoke and dry chemical powder from the extinguishers, all three floors of the apartment building were temporarily evacuated while firefighters ventilated the structure. Residents were allowed to return home later Monday night.
The fire remains under investigation, officials said.
