Large turnout expected tonight at meeting on rehab center near Campton Hills

Kane County's zoning board tonight will continue its review of plans to convert a former private school into a high-end inpatient rehab center that could host up to 120 residents, a bump of 24 more than in a 2013 proposal.

The advisory panel's review of Maxxam Partners LLC's plans has been largely procedural so far, but more details are expected to be revealed tonight about operations and security at the rehab center, proposed for the former Glenwood School at 41W400 Silver Glen Road near Campton Hills.

In January 2013, Campton Hills trustees denied a request for a similar facility at the school.

Barb Wojnicki, a Kane County Board member whose district includes the site, said most of her constituents oppose the Maxxam plan.

She cited concerns over the facility's impact on fire protection services and whether the location is appropriate, considering similar centers typically are near hospitals or commercial areas. The Glenwood site is zoned for agricultural use.

"I do think we will have a very, very large residents' turnout (tonight)," Wojnicki said. "It's a community issue. This isn't just a local issue to Campton Hills."

Maxxam officials have enlisted the help of F. Keith Brown, a former chief judge in Kane County, to present the plan.

Company officials say the center would create 120 new jobs and contribute $336,878 in new property tax revenue each year. The county stands to receive about $15,000 of that, while Burlington Central Unit District 301 would receive about $256,000.

Those figures won't change the opinion of the Campton Hills village board, which unanimously passed a resolution opposing the plan.

"Our stance hasn't changed," Campton Hills Village President Harry Blecker said. "We're opposed to this. We'll have our say (tonight)."

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Kane County Branch Court, 530 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

If the zoning board doesn't make a decision, the meeting will continue at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the same location.

The full 24-member county board has the final say on the rehab center, and a majority vote is needed for approval.
