Man accidentally shoots, kills himself in Hoffman Estates

A 31-year-old man from Clarksville, Tennessee, died Wednesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the abdomen while cleaning his small-caliber handgun in a Hoffman Estates hotel room Tuesday evening, police said.

James Smith-Woodward was pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He had called 911 at 6:07 p.m. Tuesday from his hotel room on the 2800 block of Greenspoint Parkway.

Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Kasia Cawley said Smith-Woodward was alone when the gun went off and there were no indications that the gun wasn't legally owned and possessed by him.
