St. Charles pedestrian dies after struck by car in Elgin

A St. Charles man died early this morning after he was struck by a vehicle in Elgin, police said.

The 46-year-old man was walking in the roadway when he was struck at about 5:25 a.m. by a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 54-year-old Elgin man who was traveling south on Route 31 near Route 20, according to the preliminary investigation.

It appears the victim was walking south on Route 31 past Route 20, and was possibly crossing the road, Cmdr. Colin Fleury said.

The St. Charles man was pronounced dead at Presence St. Joseph Hospital. The driver was not injured, police said.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives, police said.

The busy intersection of Routes 31 and 20 was closed for approximately four hours. The police department's traffic unit is investigating. Anyone with information about the crash should call (847) 289-2661.
