Fox Lake cops bring joy to children

Several Fox Lake children received a special holiday treat as they shopped with Fox Lake police officers, Lake County sheriff's deputies and other local law enforcement agencies during the Fox Lake Police Department's Shop with a Cop program Monday.

The special event started at Moose Lodge 691 in Johnsburg with 58 children visiting Santa and eating pizza before heading to the Wal-Mart in Johnsburg to shop.

"It is a very exciting event. We are happy about it at the sheriff's office, as is the Fox Lake police," said detective Chris Covelli of the Lake County sheriff's department. "Everybody that gets to participate is very excited to get to go out with a cop, and they get to hang out with Santa as well."

The purpose of the program is to benefit children in need by allowing them an opportunity to shop for needed items such as winter coats, clothing, toys and other presents.

Each child was given $100.00 to buy gifts funded completely by donations. The police escorts worked with the young shoppers as they picked out presents and assisted in keeping track of how much was spent.

"I love kids. It is a great way to give back to the community," said Fox Lake Police Officer Regan Cruz as he helped Christopher Meade, 8, of Spring Grove pick out toys.
