Police: Elgin deaths a murder-suicide

Police said Sunday the deaths of an Elgin husband and wife whose bodies were found in their homes Saturday were the result of an apparent murder-suicide.

Officers discovered Donald Stephens, 77, and Lynn Stephens, 75, dead Saturday morning after being asked to conduct a welfare check at the couple's residence in the 100 block of Brookside Drive, police said.

During an investigation, detectives determined that Donald Stephens used a handgun to kill his wife and then himself.

An autopsy will be performed by the Kane County coroner's office Monday, police said.

Police said Sunday they would not comment on what they believe led up to the apparent murder-suicide until after they see the results of Monday's autopsy.
