Police: Suspicious package at Des Plaines Goodwill store a hoax

No explosives were found after police searched a Des Plaines Goodwill store where a suspicious package had been dropped off Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The package apparently had been dropped off by someone who donated items to the store on the 1500 block of Lee St., police said. Store employees discovered what they believed to be an explosive device in one of the donated boxes, police said.

An employee took the suspicious package to the store's rear parking lot, placed it on the curb and called police. Officers also deemed it suspicious, evacuated surrounding businesses and set up a perimeter, police said.

The Cook County Sheriff's bomb squad determined it was a "hoax device" and cleared the scene, police said.

Bomb-sniffing dogs also searched the store and found no indications of an explosive.

Des Plaines police continue to investigate.
