Turkey raffle fundraiser in Fox River Grove

It's been an annual holiday tradition for more than 60 years: raffling off turkeys at the Fox River Grove Fire Station.

This year's turkey raffle fundraiser, which raises money for local children and for firefighting tools, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Fox River Grove Fire Station One, 411 Algonquin Road. About 500 people are expected this year.

People can buy raffle tickets to win any of 150 hams and turkeys. The event also features prizes and refreshments.

Guests are asked to park in the train station parking lot.

"It's a lot of fun," Fox River Grove Fire Chief Bob Kreher said. "We contribute any extra (turkeys) to needy families we know in town, and the rest we give to the Cary-Grove food pantry."

Money raised during this year's event will be used by the Fox River Grove Firefighters Association for uniforms, extra training, equipment, education, scholarships for Cary-Grove High School students and sending burned children to summer camp.
