Canadiens bust out in 3rd period, beat Islanders 4-1

MONTREAL (AP) - David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher scored 1:33 apart in the third period to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

Dale Weise and Tomas Plekanec also scored for Montreal. The Canadiens are 3-0-1 since Mike Condon replaced injured Carey Price as the starting goaltender and 12-2-1 overall.

Kyle Okposo scored and the Islanders lost for the fourth time in five games, including two overtime defeats.

Montreal had a 24-18 shot advantage and beat former Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak for only the second time in six meetings.

Desharnais put Montreal up 2-1 on a 2-on-1 with Tomas Fleishmann 6:22 into the third. The rush was created after the puck glanced off linesman Michael Cormier in the neutral zone.

Gallagher then scored from the doorstep by deflecting Max Pacioretty's shot at 7:55.

Weise scored his fifth goal in the last four games by redirecting Jeff Petry's feed past Halak on a power play with 1:10 left in the first period. It was Weise's team-leading eighth goal of the season, two short of his career high.

The Canadiens had just killed a penalty when Okposo skated through the defense into the slot and beat Condon with a wrist shot 3:35 into the second frame.

Plekanec got his sixth of the season into an empty net with 2:03 left.

NOTES: Montreal killed all three Islander power plays and has yet to allow a short-handed goal at home in 23 chances this season. ... The Canadiens complete a four-game homestand Saturday against Boston. The Isles play host to the Bruins on Sunday.
