One in custody after Dundee Township house fire
One person is in police custody after a Wednesday afternoon fire destroyed a house in unincorporated Dundee Township, authorities said.
Kane County sheriff's Lt. Kevin Williams said arson is suspected. Witnesses who reported seeing the fire also noticed a man with a gas can on the property on Tollgate Road, just north of I-90 in Elgin, Williams said.
Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said authorities were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. The unidentified man, who was "detained" by local residents, was then taken into custody by sheriff's deputies, he said.
Gengler said no charges had been filed as of late Wednesday afternoon, he said, and an investigation continues.
Nobody was inside the house, which was in the process of being renovated, at the time of the fire, Gengler said.
When Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District crews arrived on the scene, shortly after Elgin fire officials, the house was nearly "fully engulfed" except for part of the west side of the house, Rutland-Dundee Chief Rick Thomas said.
A damage estimate was not immediately available, Thomas said.
