Kimball Hill Pond undergoing renovations

Rolling Meadows renovates dock, waterfall feature

Submitted by Rolling Meadows Park District

The Rolling Meadows Park District maintenance staff has been working to correct the waterfall feature at Kimball Hill Pond.

The park district ordered a new pump, and after two days the pump was jammed. Rather than risking burning out the motor, staff wanted to see what was happening with the intake pipe.

Staff pumped the water level down to find that there was several feet of silt built up around the pipe. They dug out the silt buildup and created a new "cage" for the intake pipe to prevent garbage from blocking the flow of water through the water fall.

After the silt was cleaned up, some rock "rip rap" was ordered to stabilize the area and act as a natural filter. While the water level was low, staff discovered some of the finger piers had structural problems, so the outcroppings were stabilized and rock was added around the base to prevent erosion. Staff also hauled out eight shopping carts and lots of other debris.

The park district had planned on replacing all of the decking on the main pier this fall, so they ordered the wood and started the replacement process while the water level was dropped. This project is projected to be completed in a few weeks.
